Daddy. Glasses. Hii (pointing to Cochlear Implant). Sleep.
Daddy, sit, eat.
Misha-pee, gone!
Baby, milk, drink, awwwww.

If you were to ask our two-year old daughter about daddy's Cochlear Implant, you would probably get replies like those. I haven't been that active posting on this blog lately - life gets in the way sometimes - but also, I was struggling to think what to post. A blog entitled "Everything's going great, I can hear really well" sounds nice, but, well - it's kind of boring. The title says it all, and there's not much to add after that. I thought of asking my family members to write some posts about what they think about Daddy/Husband having a new CI and hearing well - that will come later. Having a CI has had a big effect on my wife and older children, but perhaps the largest change has come in the relationship with our two-year old daughter; let me explain...
The older ones all could understand that Daddy/Hubby wasn't able to hear well. They knew how to adapt (talk louder, get my attention, etc). Having me not be able to communicate well was hard on them, sure, but they were all old enough to understand the situation and deal with it. Our two-year old, however, didn't understand, and therefore couldn't adapt. If she could talk and explain herself, I think she'd say things like this:
Now that Daddy has a Cochlear Implant:
- He seems to understand what I want when I tell him something.
- He is more fun to play with because we can talk about things when we play.
- He is able to help me learn how to say words the right way.
- He notices if I stop making noise, and comes to find out what kind of trouble I'm getting myself into.
- He notices when I'm crying in the far side of the house and comes to find out what's wrong.
- He laughs when I say something funny
Oh, and those first 4 "sentences"
Daddy. Glasses. Hii. Sleep. - she knows that when Daddy goes to sleep, he takes off his glasses and Cochlear Implant.
Daddy, sit, eat - pretty obvious one that. She wants me to sit down and eat with her.
Misha-pee, gone! Doesn't make sense until you know that "misha-pee" is how she pronounces "Christmas Tree."
Baby, milk, drink, awwwww - said when looking at a picture of a baby drinking a bottle of milk.
I think she would also say, "Thanks for getting a Cochlear Implant, Daddy. I love you."
